7.3. Microsoft Management Console

Many of the utilities that you see in Windows are built on top of the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). MMC is a component framework that adds functionality by loading a set of "snap-ins," or MMC-compliant components. Third-party applications can use the MMC API and show up inside the framework, but nearly all Computer Management utilities that you find in the Administrative Tools folder are MMC applications. Among the utilities that are MMC snap-ins are Device Manager, Disk Defragmenter, Event Viewer, Performance Monitor, and Services.
