14.2. Installing Server Core

Server Core is installed using the same installer that you use for any other version of Windows Server 2008. Server Core installation requires a clean install from media or a network share. Server Core is available for both the x86 and x64 versions of Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter Editions. Although Server Core doesn't support many of the features that Enterprise and Datacenter Editions offer, you do get the higher processor limits moving to both, as well as the Datacenter assurance program for system reliability.

To install Server Core on a local system:

  1. Insert the media into the server's optical drive. Setup should proceed automatically.
