6.2. File Services Role

Perhaps the widest installed role Windows servers perform is that of file servers—or what was once categorized as file and print servers. File servers are a very refined category, and one area that sees continual development in every server release. You can get a sense of just how important file servers are by considering the number of features or services that this role offers, as well as how much new development has taken place.

Most books on Windows Server technology tend to gloss over file services and generally make short shrift of the subject.
