4.5. Domain Topologies

In the original domain implementation that shipped with Windows Server 2000 a primary domain controller (PDC) was supported by any number of backup domain controllers (BDC). When a PDC failed or was taken offline, a BDC was promoted to a PDC. To update domain controllers, this system featured the undesirable characteristic of having a significant amount of domain replication traffic. Windows domains also developed inconsistencies in domain data when the PDC was switched to another system or corrupted.

To lessen the dependency of the domain infrastructure on the PDC as a single point of failure, Microsoft moved to a domain model where BDCs were eliminated in favor of a distributed system of equal domain controllers. A scheme ...
