4.2. Creating a Domain Controller

There are two basic steps to creating a domain controller: selecting and installing the type of Active Directory role(s) you wish to operate in, and applying the DCPROMO command to the system. To install the Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) server role, you can click on the Add Roles link in the server manager to launch the Add Roles wizard, and enable the Active Directory Domain Services check box. There are several different Active Directory role services, and the section "Active Directory Roles" describes these services in more detail.
