7.1. Command-Line Tools

Microsoft has continually been beefing up command-line tools in their servers, and Windows Server 2008 is no exception. Since the bulk of this chapter describes the Server Manager console and its various snap-ins, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that there is a command-line version of the Server Manager called SERVERMANAGERCMD.EXE that is found at %WinDir%\System32. You can get help for this utility (which has a lot of options) by executing the command SERVERMANAGERCMD /?. The output for this very useful command appears as follows:

C:\Windows\system32>servermanagercmd /?

Usage:
ServerManagerCmd.exe
Installs and removes roles, role services and features.
Also displays the list of all roles, role services, and features ...
