Chapter 4. Active Directory

Active Directory (AD) is so central to Windows networking it is hard to make any significant changes to Windows servers and clients without modifying it. Since AD was first introduced in Windows 2000, there have been changes with every version. Depending on how you look at it, Active Directory in Windows Server 2008 is the third major version and a rather mature system.

The changes in AD for this version are modest. From a topology standpoint, the introduction of read-only domain controllers should make it easier to deploy Windows in remote offices, delegate authority to users, and keep sensitive security information secure.
