Protecting Email

Because the majority of malware is delivered via email, it’s important to understand the attacks on email and some of the different steps to take for protection.

As mentioned previously, email delivers the majority of malware, often in the form of spam.

This section summarizes the important elements that many organizations implement to protect email:

Antivirus Software This is a primary protection. Some AV software can strip off or quarantine malicious attachments. Other AV software uses real-time protection to detect malware as soon as a user tries to open it. In addition to installing AV software on the client systems, organizations install AV software on the email server to filter out malicious email.
