Understanding Transitions

As you'll see, using and customizing transitions is easy. Using them effectively is also easy, if you keep several simple concepts in mind.

Let's examine these concepts with reference to the birthday party video I've been working on. To recap, here are the major project components.

  • Setting the scene: Includes exterior shots of the house and interior shots as establishing shots.

  • Arrival: People arriving, meeting and greeting, and getting set for the party.

  • Entertainment: The longest segment of the video (about 15 minutes), with video of the clown and crowd reactions to the magic act.

  • Transition to cake scene: Children having fun and then walking to the dining room.

  • Cake scene: Shots of “Happy Birthday” and blowing out ...
