Creating a System Restore Point

Once you have your system totally tuned and optimized—that is, updated and cleared of extraneous applications—and before you install Movie Maker, create a restore point with Windows XP's System Restore utility. This feature, new in XP, can restore your computer to its status at an earlier time and date—the restore point—modifying only programs, not documents, e-mail, or Favorites selections. This way, if your computer ever becomes unstable, you'll have a very stable point to return to.

To create a restore point

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. The System Restore Window opens (Figure 1.9).
