Group Policy Logging

We’ve examined some tools for looking at what policies have been processed for a given computer or user, but what if this RSoP data doesn’t provide enough information to solve the problem? Sometimes problems related to Group Policy core processing or CSE processing don’t reveal themselves easily. In that case, the next step is to turn to the detailed Group Policy log files.

Basically, you can use two classes of logs for in-depth Group Policy troubleshooting:

  • The Application event log on a given computer. This is where any Group Policy related events are reported.

  • Text file logs that are generated by various parts of the Group Policy infrastructure.
