Interoperability
Windows 2000 adopts Active Directory as its directory service, making it possible to gain more interoperability with other directory services. Active Directory is based on LDAP version 3 but supports LDAP version 2 and the Name Service Provider Interface (NSPI). LDAP is an industry standard; many programs already use it, and many new programs are being deployed to use it. The Active Directory can share data with other directory services that also support LDAP (such as Netscape). The support of the NSPI protocol provides compatibility with the Exchange directory.
