NetBEUI

NetBIOS was developed to allow communications over a local area network (LAN). A transport protocol was necessary for this to occur. The first one developed was the NetBIOS Frames Protocol (NBFP). The NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI) Frames Protocol (NBF) was developed as the basis of Microsoft networking. Early versions of Microsoft networking products provided the NetBIOS API only with the NetBEUI protocol.

The NetBEUI protocol allows Windows 2000 computers to communicate with computers running Windows for Workgroups, MS-DOS, Windows NT (all versions), and Microsoft LanManager-compatible networks, provided they are located on the same network segment.
