TCP/IP Troubleshooting Tools and Strategies

Windows 2000 includes several utilities with the TCP/IP stack. Many of these have enhanced functions as well.

IPConfig

IPConfig is a command-line utility that prints the TCP/IP configuration of a host. When used with the /all switch, it produces a detailed configuration report for all interfaces, including any configured serial ports (RAS). You can also redirected output to a file.

Caching DNS entries speeds up name resolution, but you might not see changes made to DNS entries. Rebooting the server fixes this; however, ipconfig has some new options that solve this problem without rebooting. New options available include

ipconfig /displaydnsDisplays a list of DNS entries Windows has cached
ipconfig /registerdns ...
