I'll round out the discussion of Windows 2000 system architecture by talking about drivers. Drivers have significant security implications because they can operate in kernel mode and thus completely circumvent system security. Kernel mode drivers act as part of the trusted code base (TCB)—essentially as a part of the operating system itself. For this reason, it is absolutely essential that every driver come from a trusted source and be installed by a competent administrator.
