Chapter 4

Virtualizing Desktop Applications

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • Understanding how an operating system is altered during a typical application installation
  • How virtualizing applications works with App-V
  • Understanding the App-V infrastructure components
  • Architecting an App-V infrastructure for your organization
  • How to decide which applications should be virtualized
  • Recognizing the business benefits of virtualizing applications

People often say that data is an organization’s most important asset, but without applications to manipulate and display it, data is worthless. Therefore, enabling employees to work from anywhere and on any device must include not only access to the data, but also—and more important—access to the applications that allow them to work with the data. As computing capabilities have evolved exponentially, so have the applications that use these capabilities; they are well integrated and intuitive, but they are also big and, frankly, cumbersome to deploy and maintain. This chapter looks at the evolution of these applications and suggests a better way to manage and deliver applications within your organization using application virtualization.
