5. Step 1: Define the Project Scope

In this step, the project team should determine which parts of the organization to include in the design. The team should also align technical decisions with business objectives and make appropriate trade-offs between feature usage, fault tolerance, capacity, and performance. Therefore, clearly defining the scope of the project is important. The team will use the information it collects in this step to drive decisions in subsequent tasks.
