Appendix A. Using SQL Server Instances

In previous versions of SQL Server, it was possible to install more than one instance of the SQL Server engine in the same machine using some Registry tricks. Although this method did the trick, it was very tedious and, more importantly, it was not supported by Microsoft. One of the new features Microsoft introduced in SQL Server 2000 is the capability to run more than one copy or instance of SQL Server in the same computer. This new feature is called multi-instance support and basically allows you to maintain multiple installations of SQL Server running independently in just one server.
