Data Storage in an OLAP Database

Remember that the multidimensional databases created in Analysis Services are all based on underlying source data that resides in other relational data stores. In most instances, this underlying relational data store is a data warehouse or data mart. When you process a cube, that source data must be stored in such a way that it can be retrieved by Analysis Services and returned as a resultset to a client application. Analysis Services supports three storage modes:

  • Multidimensional OLAP (MOLAP)

  • Relational OLAP (ROLAP)

  • Hybrid OLAP (HOLAP)
