What Is OLAP?

The term OLAP stands for Online Analytical Processing. As its name implies, it is a technology centered around the analysis of data. OLAP applications allow users to select, view, and analyze transactional data from a variety of sources, which allows corporations to extract additional value from their traditional Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) systems and data warehouses. OLAP is really an extension, or further refinement, of previous genres of applications such as Decision Support Systems (DSSs) and Executive Information Systems (EISs).
