Setting Up Your SQL Server as a Mail Client

As mentioned previously, SQL Mail can utilize any MAPI-compliant email service. In order to keep this chapter manageable, however, we will only discuss SQL Mail in the context of Microsoft Exchange Server. SQL Mail works equally well with Microsoft Mail or any other MAPI-compliant software.

Before you can use SQL Mail, your SQL Server machine must be set up as a valid MAPI mail client. If you are running Microsoft Exchange, this means that you must have the Microsoft Exchange client software installed on your SQL Server, and you must have a valid mailbox established for the SQL Server user on the Exchange Server.
