SQL Mail is a service that enables SQL Server to utilize email functionality via any MAPI-compliant email host. SQL Mail can connect to Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows NT mail, or a POP3 server. SQL Server uses email in several different ways—SQL Mail, SQL Agent, and Data Transformation Services (DTS). SQL Mail enables you to use various stored procedures to send email within a trigger or user-defined stored procedure.
