Summary

Following is a summary of notes for monitoring SQL Server:

  • The System Monitor is an excellent tool for monitoring SQL Server and the Windows NT operating system.

  • Don't let the System Monitor drive you crazy! Instead of trying to track a multitude of counters, track five to eight key performance indicators. Anything over eight or ten different counters makes it difficult to determine what is happening.

  • Following are some useful counters to track:

    • Processor: % Processor Time

    • SQLServer: BufferManager: Cache Hit Ratio

    • PhysicalDisk: % Disk Time

    • SQLServer: General Statistics: User Connections

    • NBT Connections: Bytes Total/sec
