At the Windows 2000 launch, Microsoft made a surprise announcement. Using Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000, they had blown away all the time performance based TPC-C benchmarks! Microsoft had always placed in the top spots on the Price/Performance benchmark, which rewards high transactions at a low cost. But Microsoft had not been able to place SQL Server 6.5 or SQL Server 7.0 in the top 10 TPC-C marks, which exclude cost and are based solely on performance. The top 10 lists have been owned by UNIX based systems running Oracle, DB2, or Sybase.
