Multiple Database Instances

A big enhancement new to SQL Server 2000 is the ability to run multiple instances of the SQL Server 2000 database engine on the same computer. Each instance has its own databases (system and user databases), memory pool, SQL Server Agent services, SQL Server services, network connections, registry keys associated with the SQL Server Agent, SQL Server services, or RDBMS engine, and different names. Only one copy of the client utilities is installed and can be used by the multiple instances. Applications connecting to the different instances connect using the different names assigned to each instance.
