SQL Server Agent

SQL Server Agent is an easy-to-use and robust task scheduler and alert manager. It includes several useful features, such as history logs and the capability to email or page an operator when an event occurs.

SQL Server Agent has the following components:

  • Jobs

  • Alerts

Jobs

Jobs are typically used to schedule and automate tasks. SQL Server Agent can automate many types of jobs, including the following:

  • Backups— Automatic database backups should be an integral part of everyone's production systems. SQL Server Agent can automatically back up a database at a preset interval. See Chapter 10, “Backup and Recovery,” for more information on automatically backing up the database.
