Developing a SQL Server maintenance plan is a proactive approach that can help minimize system downtime. SQL Server 2000 has greatly simplified database maintenance, however, I still like to compare SQL Server to a car. Both require preventive maintenance and periodic tune-ups. To help you keep SQL Server motoring along, this chapter discusses the types of maintenance that should be performed by a DBA.
