Using Multiple Backup Devices (Striped Backups) and Media Sets

SQL Server 6.x added the capability to perform backups to multiple backup devices called parallel striped backups. SQL Server 2000 continues and enhances the capability, but now refers to it as using multiple backup devices. Using multiple backup devices lessens the amount of time required to back up a database, filegroup, or transaction log by reading/writing to backup devices simultaneously. For example, if it takes you three hours to perform a database backup on a single tape drive, you can add two more tape drives and cut the backup time to about an hour. An example of a multiple device backup is shown in Figure 10.14.
