Filegroups

Filegroups allow database files and objects to be logically grouped together. Tables, indexes, text datatypes, ntext datatypes, and image datatypes can be placed on specific filegroups (see Figure 8.15). By spreading database I/O across hard drives, filegroups provide the potential to improve database performance. Filegroups can also simplify administrative tasks such as backing up a filegroup or adding new files to new disks.
