Deploying BI Semantic Models to an Analysis Services Instance

Only BI Semantic Models defined as Tabular Projects can be deployed to an Analysis Services Tabular Mode instance. This does not mean that only projects originally developed in SQL Server Data Tools can be deployed. Microsoft has made it easy to convert a BI Semantic Model developed in PowerPivot add-in for Excel 2010 into a Tabular Project as well as UDM models from Analysis Services Multidimensional Mode.

To deploy a BI Semantic Model to an Analysis Services Instance, follow these steps:

1. In SQL Server Data Tools, open the Tabular Project.
2. Right-click the Tabular Project properties. The Tabular Project Property Pages dialog window opens. In this dialog window you need to provide information for:

  • Deployment Server
  • DirectQuery Options

4. Click Apply. To deploy, click the Build menu option, and select Deploy AWTabularProject. The Tabular project AWTabularProject used in this example is now deployed.
