Constructing Calculated Members

Throughout the chapters of this book, you have been assembling calculated members in the WITH clause of your SELECT statements. These calculated members are only accessible to the queries with which they are defined. As such, they are referred to as query-scoped calculated members.

Cube-scoped calculated members, on the other hand, are accessible to all users with access to a cube. These are defined within a cube’s MDX script through CREATE MEMBER statements. Cube-scoped calculated members have access to a bit more functionality to provide greater consistency than their query-scoped counterparts. They are also essential when analytic applications do not support the ad hoc definition of calculated members.
