Calculated Members

You can think of a calculated member as just another member of an existing attribute or user-hierarchy. However, unlike traditional members, calculated members have no data actually stored at the points in the cube space associated with them. Instead, calculated members are assigned an MDX expression. That expression is evaluated as a cell associated with the calculated member is accessed to determine the cell’s value. The following exercise provides a simple demonstration of a calculated member.

Construct a Simple Calculated Member

  1. Open the MDX Query Editor to the MDX Step-by-Step database.

  2. In the code pane, enter the following query:

    SELECT { ([Date].[Calendar Year].[CY 2003]), ([Date].[Calendar Year].[CY 2004]) } ON COLUMNS, ...
