SSRS provides the infrastructure components necessary to manage and execute reports. However, without reports to execute, SSRS would be a very boring product. Microsoft has developed a report designer that enables you to create all of the reports that make SSRS useful to an organization. Along with a report designer, an open report definition called Report Definition Language (RDL) has been created to enable third parties to develop tools to generate reports for SSRS.
A report consists of two major components:
A data source that defines the query or stored procedure that provides data
A report definition that defines how the data is formatted and displayed
