Full-Text Indexes

Once the full-text catalog has been created, you can create the full-text indexes that are the basis for searching unstructured data.

Full-text indexes can be created on CHAR/VARCHAR columns as well as XML and VARBINARY. Although CHAR/VARCHAR/XML columns can be processed directly, the full-text indexing engine needs help with VARBINARY data. When you are applying a full-text index to a VARBINARY(MAX) column, you also specify a type column that tells the full-text indexing engine the filter to load to parse the stored document. SQL Server 2008 ships with 50 filters that allow processing of a variety of document types such as HTML, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
