Microsoft released SQL Server Mobile Edition 3.0 at the end of 2005 and then released SQL Server Compact Edition 3.1 in January 2007. The main difference between versions 3.0 and 3.1 is that the 3.1 licensing allows you to use SQL Server Compact Edition on both desktop- and laptop-based applications.
