In versions of SQL Server prior to SQL Server 2008, the tools available for monitoring SQL Server performance were somewhat limited. Yes, you had the Windows Performance Monitor, Activity Monitor, SQL Server Profiler, and SQL Trace, but performing in-depth performance monitoring usually required the purchase of third-party tools to collect, monitor, and view performance information in a useful way.
