SQL Server and VM Technology

A VM or Virtual Machine is an emulation of a particular computer system. The VM allows for a program or operating system to be created within another host environment. The host environment is typically the physical server that contains more than one VM instance. The VMs that are running on the host are referred to as guests.

This technology has become very popular because it does have some distinct advantages. These advantages include lower energy costs because there are less physical machines running. Fewer physical servers mean that there is less space taken in data centers and less hardware to maintain.
