Managing Server Roles

SQL Server 2012 introduced a new user-defined server role. These server roles are custom roles that you can define to group your logins and simplify the administration of permissions at the server level. Generally, custom server roles (nonfixed) are created if the fixed server roles do not meet the security needs of the administrator and more granular control of permissions is needed.
