The Role of SQL Browser

You might be surprised to learn that when clients try to connect to SQL Server 2014, their first network access is made over UDP Port 1434 to the SQL Browser service.

Regardless of the encryption status of the connection itself, login credentials are always encrypted when passed to SQL Server 2014 (to foil any malicious packet sniffing). If a certificate signed by an external authority (such as VeriSign) is not installed on the server, SQL Server automatically generates a self-signed certificate for use in encrypting login credentials.
