Applying a Service Pack or Cumulative Update to an Existing Installation

If you want to apply a service pack or cumulative update to an existing SQL Server installation, you’ll need to download the service pack or cumulative update executable and apply it to the existing installation.

Before applying a service pack or cumulative update to an existing SQL Server installation, make sure to back up all user-created databases, as well as the system databases master, model, msdb, and any replicated databases. If you have installed Analysis Services, back up the entire OLAP directory (as discussed earlier in this chapter in the “Installation Paths” section) and all its subdirectories.
