Utilize a third-party backup utility to assist with the automation of SharePoint backups.
Ensure that metadata stored in document libraries is replicated on other document libraries if documents are transferred between them.
Verify that the SQL recovery model is set to Full to allow for full restores of SQL data.
Use the STSADM command-line program to back up individual sites, but use the SQL tools to back up the entire farm.
