Copy and Customize an Out-of-the-Box Workflow

Being able to customize the out-of-the-box workflows in SharePoint gives you a great starting point when creating workflows. However, although you can customize the out-of-the-box workflows, best practice dictates that you should always create a copy of the workflow provided and then customize the copy. If you simply make changes directly to the out-of-the-box workflow then there is no way to return the workflow to the out-of-the-box state. This would apply to anywhere the workflow is used. By copying and modifying the original workflows you can always go back to a working state to make future changes or new workflows.
