XSLT Defined

Before proceeding further, let’s resolve the terminology used throughout this and subsequent chapters when referring to XSLT. Basically, a SharePoint deployment stores XSLT files with the file suffix .XSL. If you have worked with XSLT files in Visual Studio, then you are probably aware that, by default, Visual Studio saves its XSLT files with a file suffix of .XSLT. Fundamentally, both XSL and XSLT format and style XML; XSLT is the style sheet used to format XML, which is similar to using cascading style sheets (CSS) to style HTML and XHTML pages. In this book, I default to using the term XSLT when referring to styling Web parts, XLVs, and DFWPs.
