Associations in External Lists

By creating an association between two or more External Lists, you can show columns from another External List. This enables you to create a link between two data sources. A common case for this is a Sales order, with a link to the item you are selling. In this example you create an association between two External Lists, although you can create links between external systems in SharePoint Designer using a standard data source as discussed in Chapter 19.
