Themes in SharePoint 2007

If you have used SharePoint 2007 (or WSS 3.0) then you might have used themes to change the look and feel of your sites. Creating themes in SharePoint 2007 involved intervention by a server administrator, including modifying XML files and creating new folders on SharePoint Web front-end servers. Removing the option to choose themes via the Web interface also meant that XML files on the Web front-end server had to be modified and IIS reset.

In applying SharePoint 2007 themes to sites, there were additional performance effects because SharePoint had to download a second CSS file and the browser had to decipher which style to use. There were a limited set of themes and it was challenging to adjust those themes.
