How Themes Work

Basically, themes are a collection of one or more CSS files and images. They are often referred to as a super-CSS because they make it easy to rebrand or recolor many images and CSS classes simultaneously from a centrally managed location. In SharePoint sites you can apply themes irrespective of the underlying master page. Themes don’t replace master pages; rather they recolor page objects already positioned by a master page, such as navigation, fonts, background colors, links, and Web parts.
