Important Considerations When Working with Master Pages

The following points are based on lessons learned from the field over the past several years of working with and deploying master pages. You might want to consider these when you work with and create custom master pages for SharePoint sites.

• Test that any changes you make to the ribbon—including look and feel and ribbon positioning—render correctly on all pages across sites and site collections.

• Ensure that horizontal and vertical scroll bars come into play as required. For instance, if you’ve optimized a master page for a screen resolution of 1024×768, you should not see a horizontal scroll bar when viewing the site in a screen set to that resolution.
