Managing Cross-Site Navigation

In Chapter 5, you saw how to work with navigation in the Web interface, including using portal site connections to display a parent site collection in the pop-out menu. Although the portal site connection might work in a small SharePoint 2010 deployment where there are only a couple of site collections, a more robust solution is to build an additional site map into the site’s master page so that links can then be easily accessed and reused across multiple site collections. For instance, in Figure 17.131, the top-most navigational links are included using a custom site map and are in addition to the default, top-level, and Quick Launch navigation menus.
