Unchanged Since SharePoint 2007

Master pages in SharePoint 2010, like those in SharePoint 2007, continue to provide a centralized solution for managing the look and feel of content and other pages across SharePoint sites and site collections. A number of legacy features in SharePoint 2007 master pages have been carried over to SharePoint 2010 master pages, specifically content placeholders. Content placeholders in master pages define the content that is associated with content pages attached to a master page, such as search, navigation, and content. A number of legacy content placeholders are included in SharePoint 2010 master pages for upgrade purposes.
