Switching a Site to the SharePoint 2007 Look and Feel

The default.master page is included in SharePoint 2010 site collections and subsites specifically for those upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010. The default.master includes the SharePoint 2007 look and feel, including location of the Site Actions menu to the right of the screen, and other legacy interface features. It does not include SharePoint 2010 interface features, such as the ribbon. The default.master page is sometimes viewed as an alternative for achieving Internet Explorer 6 compatibility, especially on public-facing sites, because it removes those features such as the ribbon interface that are incompatible with Internet Explorer 6.
